What is Farm Credit?
The Farm Credit System is a federation of approximately 100 independent, locally managed and governed, customer-owned agricultural credit cooperatives across the United States. It was established by Congress in 1916 due to a shortage of reasonably priced credit in rural areas. While the system is regulated by an independent federal agency, it receives no taxpayer funding. All system funding comes from the sale of notes and bonds on the open market. Today the system provides over $150 billion in credit and related services to agricultural and rural communities. Carolina Farm Credit is one of these 100 customer–owned cooperatives. We provide over $1.2 billion in loans and related services to homeowners, farmers, foresters, and agribusiness in 54 North Carolina counties from 37 local service centers. Patronage Refund As a customer-owned cooperative, a portion of our profits are returned to our customers annually through patronage refunds. While patronage refunds are never guaranteed, we have never missed a year since our first patronage refund was paid in 1988. In that period of time, we have returned over $251 million in cash to our customers. We put our profits in your pockets! Community Involvement Our employees are your neighbors and are actively involved in their communities, churches, and civic organizations. Support for Ag Communities We maintain an active outreach to young, beginning, small, and minority farmers by making financing and educational options available.
