Graves Body Shop
Louie Graves is the owner and president of the business at 31 Vance Street which was started by his father Lewis Graves in 1963. His father first came to Hamlet in 1942. He worked for Bennett Motor Co. In Cheraw, S.C., and transferred to the Bennett Chevrolet-Buick auto dealership in Hamlet "when Hamlet was a booming town during the war," Graves said.
Lewis Graves started Graves Body Shop in 1963 on Old Gibson Road outside Hamlet and then moved the business into Hamlet
in 1973 into the former Bennett dealership building when that business moved to Rockingham in a consolidation.
"I started working at the shop sweeping floors when I was 13 and later moved up to working on cars," Louie Graves said.
He and his father were the whole staff at the start. The elder Graves retired in 1980 and Louie Graves took over. Lewis Graves dies in 1990.
The staff now includes Louie Graves, Jerry Scott, Anthony Albert, Lee Ray and William McLaurin doing body work and Joy Graves is the company secretary.
Graves Body Shop does all types of body work on cars and light trucks and operates a 24 hour wrecker service available by calling 582-4969.
